Disney has removed references to a transgender storyline in Pixar’s highly anticipated animated series Win or Lose. Originally set to highlight a transgender character voiced by 18-year-old trans actress Chanel Stewart, the storyline has been pared down.

Set to premiere on February 11, 2025, Win or Lose is Pixar’s first-ever long-form series and centers on the lives of a co-ed middle school softball team preparing for their championship game. Each episode showcases a different perspective, from players to helicopter parents to even a lovesick umpire.

Written and directed by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, the show was initially praised for aiming to reflect diverse viewpoints. However, Disney’s decision to remove elements addressing gender identity has sparked a fiery debate.

In a statement, Disney acknowledged the decision, explaining:
“When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline.”

While the transgender character will remain part of the story, the absence of specific references to their gender identity marks a shift.

Others, however, viewed the cut as a step back for representation, particularly given Disney and Pixar’s history with LGBTQ+ narratives. Critics expressed disappointment that an opportunity to normalize diverse identities was removed.

Outside of family content, Disney has embraced LGBTQ+ representation in adult-oriented features, including FX’s Pose, Marvel’s Agatha All Along, and Searchlight Pictures’ All of Us Strangers.

Despite the removal of the transgender storyline, the series remains one of Pixar’s most ambitious projects, with Will Forte leading the cast as the team’s coach. Producer David Lally emphasized that Win or Lose will continue to spotlight diverse perspectives in its way, albeit without explicit references to gender identity.

Whether this compromise will win over audiences or further fuel the debate about representation in media remains to be seen.
