AITA for saying ‘what did she expect’ when my girlfriend told me her best friend’s affair partner has vanished into thin air when she told him she was pregnant?

Relationships become incredibly complicated when loyalty, morality, and personal opinions all collide at once. Sometimes you’re pulled into someone else’s chaos whether you want to be or not, and no matter what you say, you end up looking like the villain to somebody. That’s exactly where I found myself after months of hearing about my girlfriend’s best friend and her affair with a married man. From the very beginning, the whole situation felt like a disaster waiting to happen.

The secrecy, fake names, Tinder aliases, and the fact that this guy was already married all screamed temporary to me. It wasn’t some tragic love story; it looked like two people knowingly participating in something messy and irresponsible. So when the guy completely disappeared after learning about the pregnancy, I honestly wasn’t shocked at all. I felt bad for the child involved, obviously, but beyond that, I couldn’t pretend this outcome came out of nowhere. Apparently, though, saying what seemed painfully obvious to me made me look cruel, judgmental, and even misogynistic in my girlfriend’s eyes.

Time to see how Reddit weighs in on this drama.

At the end of the day, I don’t think acknowledging reality automatically makes someone heartless. The situation is objectively awful, especially now that a child is going to grow up in the middle of all this confusion and instability. But I also think there’s a difference between having empathy and completely ignoring personal responsibility. This wasn’t a random tragedy that blindsided everyone involved; it was an affair built on dishonesty from the beginning, involving a man who was already proving himself selfish and deceptive long before he vanished.

Could I have phrased my thoughts more gently? Probably. I understand why my girlfriend wanted comfort for her friend rather than blunt honesty, especially now that emotions are high and panic has set in. But I also don’t think I should be expected to pretend this outcome was shocking or unpredictable just to avoid upsetting people. Sometimes the truth sounds harsh simply because the situation itself is harsh, and being realistic about someone’s bad decisions doesn’t necessarily mean you lack compassion for them.
