There’s a huge difference between being grateful for someone’s help with your child and giving them the authority to make major decisions without you. That’s the line I’m struggling with right now. My in-laws have been looking after my 18-month-old daughter one day a week, and although my relationship with my mother-in-law has never been particularly easy, I’ve genuinely appreciated the childcare and the bond she has with her granddaughter. I never expected that one ordinary day would leave me questioning whether I can trust her to care for my daughter at all.
When my daughter was brought home, I was casually told that she had “a bit of an accident.” What I didn’t know was that she had actually been taken to the hospital, had X-rays, and had been seen by doctors, all without me or my husband being told. Thankfully, she was physically okay, but emotionally, I was absolutely devastated. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the hospital trip wasn’t the part that made me angry. It was the decision to deliberately keep her parents completely in the dark.

What does Reddit have to say about all this? Let’s find out.

I know that my daughter is lucky to have grandparents who love her and want to care for her, and I genuinely don’t want this situation to turn into some dramatic family feud where my MIL is suddenly forbidden from seeing her granddaughter. I also recognize that she was trying to make a decision in what she believed was my daughter’s best interest, and thankfully the outcome was good. But I cannot shake the feeling that something fundamental has changed. If my daughter is injured badly enough to require a hospital visit, I need to know.
Whether I am pregnant, at work, asleep, nearby, or completely unable to attend makes no difference; I am still her mother, and my husband is still her father. We should be given the information and allowed to decide how we want to respond. What worries me even more is that this happened alongside another recent disagreement about a basic parenting boundary, followed by my MIL becoming distant when we asked her to respect it. I’m not looking to punish her. I’m trying to decide whether the convenience of one day of childcare is worth continuing an arrangement where I no longer feel completely respected as my daughter’s parent.
