AITA for apparently being the reason my ex’s engagement ended?

There are moments in life where you find yourself accused of something so absurd that you almost laugh, until you realize people genuinely believe it. That’s exactly where I am right now. Somehow, I’ve become “the reason” my ex’s engagement fell apart. Not his lack of effort, not his history of disappearing when our child needed him, not his lies that set impossible expectations for his fiancée, but me, the woman who simply said no to handing her six-year-old over to a stranger. I never wanted drama; all I wanted was stability and safety for my child. But instead, I found myself caught in a storm of phone calls, blame, and guilt that was never mine to carry. It’s strange how easily people twist boundaries into hostility, and how a simple act of protection can be painted as sabotage.

Now it’s Reddit’s turn to weigh in on this mess.

In the end, maybe it’s easier for people to blame me than to face the truth about him. Maybe it’s more comforting to believe that an ex’s “bitterness” ruined a relationship than to admit that immaturity, entitlement, and deception were already rotting it from within. I didn’t break his engagement; it shattered under the weight of his own choices. I simply refused to let my child become a prop in someone else’s fantasy of blended-family perfection. If that makes me the villain in their story, so be it. I can live with that. What I can’t live with is pretending that boundaries don’t matter, or that my child’s safety and comfort should ever come second to saving a relationship that wasn’t mine to protect. Let them talk, I’ll keep doing what I’ve always done: being the responsible parent he never tried to be.

How did this make you feel?
