AITA for getting mad about my mom marrying my fiance’s dad?

Family drama is messy enough on its own, but sometimes life creates situations so bizarre and emotionally complicated that they feel more like the plot of a soap opera than reality. For the last five years, my fiancé and I have built a stable, loving relationship together after meeting in college, surviving long-distance family dynamics, and even postponing our wedding because of the pandemic. Despite everything, we were excited to finally bring our families together and move forward into the next chapter of our lives.

What should have been a simple meeting between parents to discuss wedding details turned into the beginning of something none of us could have predicted. My mother, whose affair years ago already shattered our family once before, secretly started dating my fiancé’s widowed father after that meeting. Three months later, she called me completely out of nowhere to announce that they had eloped in secret, and then casually informed me that I should cancel my wedding because my fiancé was now technically my stepbrother.

Time to see how Reddit weighs in on this drama.

At this point, I honestly still don’t know what I’m supposed to feel. Part of me understands that both my mother and my fiancé’s father are adults who are allowed to pursue happiness and companionship, especially after divorce and loss. But another part of me can’t ignore how selfish and reckless the entire situation feels, especially because my mother immediately tried to make my relationship the problem instead of her own decisions.

It’s one thing for them to fall in love unexpectedly; it’s another thing entirely to tell me I should throw away a five-year relationship, cancel my wedding, and walk away from the father of my unborn child because of choices they made in secret. The fact that my fiancé’s father doesn’t even see an issue with us staying together makes my mother’s reaction feel even more manipulative and irrational. Right now, everything feels emotionally exhausting, awkward, and deeply uncomfortable, and I’m seriously considering going low or no contact just to protect my peace and my growing family.
