Family money can bring out the best in people… or it can tear relationships apart. I recently inherited my late mother’s home — a property worth around half a million dollars — and suddenly, my three adult kids see me as their golden ticket out of debt. The problem? I’ve worked my entire life planning for my retirement, and I’m not about to give up my financial security just because they made poor financial choices in college. Now, they’re furious with me, calling me selfish and heartless, and I can’t help but wonder… am I really in the wrong here?

At the end of the day, I’m not refusing to help them out of cruelty — I’m protecting my future. My mother left me this house to ensure I could live comfortably in my later years, not to wipe out the debts my kids took on, knowing the risks. They will still get an inheritance when I’m gone, but until then, I need to take care of myself. Still, their disappointment and anger have left a cloud over our relationship. Maybe I’m being practical… or maybe I’m just being cold. So, AITA?
