AITA for not dating a single dad, even if he’s a victim?

There are moments in life when your heart and your logic clash so hard that you’re left wondering if you’ve turned into the bad guy for simply knowing your limits. I didn’t expect that one casual date could spiral into a full-blown debate about morality, victimhood, and responsibility — but here I am. When I agreed to go out with Ben, I thought it would be just a lighthearted evening, something new and simple. What I didn’t realize was that it would turn into a confrontation with my own boundaries. I’ve always been clear about what I want — and what I don’t. But apparently, saying no to something that doesn’t fit your future makes you cold, judgmental, and heartless. Now, I’m left wondering… am I truly wrong for walking away before it became too complicated?

Curious to hear the verdict from Reddit on this one.

At the end of the day, I know my decision doesn’t make me cruel. It makes me honest — brutally, unapologetically honest. The truth is, Ben deserves someone who can love both him and his children fully, without hesitation or resentment. That person just isn’t me, and pretending otherwise would’ve been unfair to all of us. Maybe people think I’m cold, or selfish, or immature for knowing what I can handle at nineteen, but I’d rather be called names than live a life built on compromise and guilt. Everyone wants to feel wanted, but not everyone wants to inherit the pieces of a story that started long before they arrived. Maybe one day, people will stop confusing boundaries for judgment — and realize that sometimes, choosing your own peace is the most respectful thing you can do for everyone involved.

How did this make you feel?
