Turning 30 is supposed to feel like one of those birthdays where you pause for a moment and realize how much your life has changed. For me, this year was already going to be emotional because I’m seven months pregnant with my first child, and I knew my life was about to change in ways I couldn’t fully imagine yet. I didn’t want a huge celebration or anything extravagant. I specifically asked for something low-key because pregnancy has left me exhausted, so I spent my birthday having a steak dinner with the people closest to me.
I was genuinely excited when everyone started handing me presents. Then I opened the first one and realized it was for the baby. Then the second. And the third. Eventually, I realized something that honestly broke my heart: every single present was for my unborn child, and not one was actually for me. I know everyone is thrilled about the baby, but on my 30th birthday, I couldn’t help wondering whether anyone still remembered to celebrate me.

Reddit always has opinions so let’s see their judgment.

I completely understand that this may sound trivial compared with everything else going on. I’m not upset that people bought things for my baby, and I certainly don’t want anyone to think I’m ungrateful for gifts that will ultimately be useful and appreciated. What hurt was the symbolism of it all. This wasn’t a baby shower, a pregnancy celebration, or a holiday for the child; it was my 30th birthday. For one evening, I wanted to feel like more than someone carrying a baby. I wanted my family and friends to remember my interests, my personality, and the person I was before becoming someone’s mother.
What made the situation even harder was being called entitled when I tried to explain that feeling. Thankfully, one of my closest friends immediately understood and apologized, which made me realize I wasn’t necessarily upset about the gifts themselves; I was hurt by what they seemed to represent. Maybe I could have handled my disappointment more quietly, but I still don’t think wanting one small reminder that I was being celebrated was unreasonable.
