AITA for taking away a toy from my wife’s 3-year-old nephew after he punched my 11-month-old daughter twice?

Family visits are supposed to be about spending time together, making memories, and letting children enjoy having cousins around, but this visit quickly became much more complicated than I ever expected. My wife’s sister and her husband traveled all the way from Korea for a month-and-a-half stay with their two children, including their three-year-old son. From the beginning, I noticed that he was extremely difficult to manage. He ignored instructions, laughed when people became upset, and seemed completely unfazed by the word “no.”

I tried not to judge because I’m fully aware that I don’t know everything about how another family raises their children. However, things changed when his behavior started involving my 11-month-old daughter. Watching a toddler punch a baby is upsetting enough, but what happened afterward bothered me even more. After a second incident involving the same child, I finally decided that I wasn’t going to stand by and watch my daughter get hurt simply because everyone else was uncomfortable enforcing a consequence.

Time to see how Reddit weighs in on this drama.

Now that everyone has had time to process what happened, I’m questioning whether I crossed a line by taking away the toy myself or whether I did exactly what needed to be done in that moment. I understand that I’m not this child’s parent, and I don’t believe I have the right to dictate every aspect of how someone else raises their son. But there is a difference between respecting another parent’s choices and allowing a child to repeatedly hurt my baby inside my own home.

The first punch already concerned me, but seeing the behavior repeated after there had been no meaningful consequence made me feel like I had to intervene. I didn’t hurt him, scream at him, or punish him excessively, I simply removed the toy he was using immediately before he hit my daughter again. Still, my wife believes I overstepped, while I feel that protecting my child is absolutely my place. Perhaps I’m wrong about discipline, but I struggle to believe that repeated aggression should ever be treated as consequence-free behavior.
