AITA for telling my DIL to get over her wedding being overshadowed by my daughter?

Family celebrations can become complicated when two major life events unexpectedly collide, but few people would expect an early labor to become the source of a family feud that continues for months. In this case, a mother is caught between her daughter Jessie and her daughter-in-law Rebecca, two women who already had a difficult relationship long before a wedding and a baby entered the picture. Jessie and Rebecca have very different personalities and have never particularly liked each other, although they have managed to remain civil for the sake of the family.

Then, during Rebecca and OP’s son’s July wedding, Jessie’s water unexpectedly broke. She was not due until August, so nobody had anticipated that she would go into labor that day. The mother rushed to the hospital while her husband stayed at the wedding, but naturally, many guests became concerned about Jessie and the baby, especially because this would be the family’s first grandchild. Jessie eventually delivered a healthy baby boy that night, but Rebecca felt that her wedding had been overshadowed, and the resentment has continued ever since.

I Told Her That Holding Onto This Resentment For So Long Was Ridiculous, Especially When Jessie Had Never Chosen To Give Birth On Her Brother’s Wedding Day

Curious to hear the verdict from Reddit on this one.

What makes this conflict especially difficult is that there are two completely different ways of looking at the same event. From Rebecca’s perspective, her wedding was one of the most important days of her life, and she may feel hurt that so much of the family’s attention shifted toward Jessie and the unexpected arrival of the first grandchild. Understandably, she wanted her wedding to be celebrated and remembered for what it was.

However, from Jessie’s perspective, there was never any deliberate attempt to steal attention or diminish her brother’s wedding. Her water broke unexpectedly; she needed medical attention, and she gave birth to a healthy baby that same night. Now, months later, Rebecca is still unwilling to attend family events if Jessie will be present, even refusing to come to her father-in-law’s birthday. The mother has made it clear that she will not exclude her own daughter from her father’s birthday simply to accommodate Rebecca’s resentment. Still, telling Rebecca to “get over it” may have been blunt enough to make an already fragile family relationship even worse. The real question is whether the mother was right to draw a firm line or whether she dismissed Rebecca’s hurt too quickly.
