AITA for not babysitting my brother’s kids after he dumped them on my front porch?

Family favors can start small and harmless, especially when children are involved. You agree to help once, then again, and before you realize it, something that was supposed to be occasional becomes an expectation that everyone assumes you will continue forever. That is essentially what happened between me and my older brother. We have never had the closest relationship, and growing up, he often treated me badly while our parents seemed to favor him because he was the athletic, popular one.

As adults, our lives went in completely different directions. I built a successful career in programming and cybersecurity, while my brother struggled financially after becoming a father and eventually having three children. Despite our history, I agreed to babysit his kids for three days at a time because I did not want innocent children to suffer because of problems between their parents and me. For a while, everything was manageable. But eventually the childcare began interfering with my own life, and I finally told my brother I was done. What I never expected was for him to simply ignore my decision, dump all three children on my doorstep anyway, and then become furious when I made sure they were safe.

Time to see how Reddit weighs in on this drama.

At this point, I honestly do not know where this family situation is going to end. I never wanted to completely cut off my parents or turn one conflict with my brother into a permanent family feud, because I still love my family despite everything that has happened. What I cannot accept, however, is being pressured into apologizing for protecting myself and my wife from a responsibility I never agreed to take on. I am especially relieved that my brother’s wife finally understood what happened because I never believed she was the main problem. She had asked me before whether babysitting was okay and clearly did not realize her husband had decided to ignore my answer.

The people I feel worst for are the children. They are innocent; they did not ask to be caught between adults, and they should never feel like they are unwanted or being passed around because their parents cannot agree on childcare. That is why I tried to solve the situation without immediately involving authorities. But with my brother now making threats, my parents issuing ultimatums, and my wife and I preparing to welcome our own baby, I may have to make some difficult choices about how much contact with my family is actually healthy for us. For now, I am hoping things calm down, but I am also preparing myself for the possibility that this is far from over.

How did this make you feel?
