Sometimes a “secret” is something you deliberately hide from someone, and sometimes it is simply a piece of information that never comes up because nobody ever asks. I’m currently stuck in the second situation, and somehow my girlfriend’s parents are treating it like the first. My girlfriend’s parents are native Russian speakers, and I also happen to speak Russian reasonably well. It’s not because I secretly studied the language specifically to understand them or because I’ve been trying to listen in on conversations they thought were private. It’s actually a random family skill that was passed down through generations after my great-grandfather learned Russian while he was a POW.
I took a course years ago, continued consuming Russian-language content occasionally, and eventually became comfortable enough to have conversations. My girlfriend has always known about it. Her parents, however, didn’t. For nearly three years, we have communicated perfectly well in German, which everyone speaks fluently. Russian simply never came up. Then, during a completely ordinary family gathering, I made a joking comment to a Russian-speaking family friend and accidentally revealed that I understood and spoke the language. The reaction was immediate, and now I’m apparently being accused of deliberately keeping a major secret.

After thinking about the situation, I still genuinely struggle to understand why this has become such a serious issue. I can appreciate that discovering someone has understood a language you occasionally speak around them might feel surprising, especially if you assumed they couldn’t understand a word. I can even understand why my girlfriend’s parents might briefly wonder whether I had been listening to conversations they thought were private. But the important distinction is that I never used my Russian to invade their privacy, uncover secrets, or gain an advantage over them.
Their occasional Russian comments were never serious or confidential, and German has always been the language we naturally use together. I also never pretended that I couldn’t speak Russian when directly asked; I simply had no reason to announce it. My girlfriend knew from the beginning, and her parents already knew the family history that led to me learning the language. If anything, the whole situation seems like an incredibly elaborate misunderstanding created by something that was never actually intended to be hidden. I didn’t keep a secret for three years; I simply never volunteered a random fact about myself that nobody had asked about. The fact that it was revealed through an unexpectedly timed joke in Russian certainly made the moment memorable, but I’m still not convinced it makes me guilty of anything.
