Some betrayals don’t just destroy a marriage; they completely reshape an entire family forever, especially when children are forced to witness the fallout long before they’re old enough to understand it. I was only seven years old when my parents’ marriage exploded in the most painful and humiliating way imaginable. What should have been a happy birthday celebration turned into the moment my mom discovered my dad had been secretly cheating on her for five years with someone she considered one of her closest friends.
The lie unraveled because my dad skipped part of my birthday party, claiming he was attending a funeral, when in reality he was accompanying his affair partner to an ultrasound appointment after finding out she was pregnant. Watching my mom’s entire world collapse that day changed everything about our family dynamic. My dad eventually married the woman he cheated with and built an entirely new family with her, while my mom spent years quietly carrying wounds that never truly healed. Even though she always encouraged me to have my own relationship with my father and half-siblings, she never pretended she could move on from that level of betrayal, and honestly, I never fully could either.

Wondering what Reddit thinks? Let’s take a look.

What frustrates me most about the entire situation is that my father still acts as though my mother and I are somehow unreasonable for not magically forgetting everything that happened just because time has passed. He talks about the affair as if it were some temporary mistake instead of years of repeated lies, deception, and betrayal that permanently changed our lives. My mom never tried to turn me against him, never stopped me from seeing him, and never demanded I choose sides.
But children are not blind, and when you publicly destroy your marriage through cheating, your kids naturally form opinions based on what they witnessed and how everyone behaved afterward. The situation became even harder to accept once I learned the affair had begun shortly after my mother nearly di*d during a pregnancy complication that also took away her ability to have more children. While she was physically and emotionally recovering from unimaginable trauma, the two people she trusted most were secretly betraying her behind her back. So no, I don’t think my mother is the reason things are awkward or divided now. The cheating created this reality, not the people who were hurt by it.
