AITA for embarrassing my FIL after I repeatedly asked him to explain his joke to me?

Some people like to believe that the past defines a person forever, while others understand that survival sometimes comes with chapters that are complicated, painful, or simply necessary. I fall into the second category. From the time I was 18 until I was 23, I worked as an escort. It is not something I romanticize, but it is something I also do not feel ashamed of, because it allowed me to survive, pay for my education, and keep a roof over my head when I had limited options.

Years later, I met my fiancé, and despite everything being eventually disclosed within his family, I thought we had moved past the judgment and uncomfortable curiosity. We were engaged, expecting a baby, and trying to build a stable life together. But during what should have been a lighthearted family gathering, a comment from my father-in-law turned into something far more pointed. What started as a joke about family resemblance quickly shifted into something that felt less like humor and more like a public attempt to humiliate me under the guise of laughter.

Now it’s Reddit’s turn to weigh in on this mess.

What this situation revealed to me is how easily jokes become a safe cover for disrespect, especially when someone’s past makes others think they are entitled to say anything without consequence. I was not trying to create conflict or embarrass anyone. I simply refused to pretend I understood something that was clearly inappropriate, and I asked for it to be explained out loud. Once the words had to stand on their own, the humor disappeared, and so did the confidence of everyone laughing.

What followed was anger directed at me for disrupting the moment, rather than reflection on why the moment was inappropriate in the first place. Being told I should apologize because of my history felt especially unfair, as if my past automatically disqualifies me from setting boundaries or reacting to disrespect. I am aware my life story is not traditional, but it does not make me less deserving of dignity. If anything, surviving what I have survived has made me less willing to quietly accept cruelty disguised as humor.

How did this make you feel?
