Stepping into a leadership role, even temporarily, can come with unexpected challenges. When my boss left for a three-week holiday, he officially placed me in charge of the team, trusting me to keep everything running smoothly until his return. Around the same time, a new employee had just joined our department to handle administrative and support work. At first, she seemed like a great addition, friendly, energetic, and eager to make a good impression with everyone she met.
Since my boss had hired her just before leaving, I made an effort to check in with her during his absence to ensure she was settling in well. What started as a routine catch-up meeting quickly turned into something far more uncomfortable than I expected. During our conversation, she casually shared a story about how she handled a conflict at her previous workplace, a story she appeared proud of. However, the details she revealed raised serious concerns for me, especially given the sensitive and confidential nature of the work our team handles every day.

In the end, the outcome was far less dramatic than the buildup had suggested, though the tension leading up to it was exhausting. Once I had the opportunity to explain my reasoning and walk my boss through the events step by step, he ultimately agreed that the decision to terminate the new hire had been the safest course of action given the circumstances. He acknowledged that allowing someone who openly bragged about sabotaging a previous workplace could pose a serious risk in an environment dealing with sensitive client information.
While he did offer a fair piece of feedback about keeping him informed of major issues during his absence so he wouldn’t be blindsided in the future, he reassured me that he would have made the same call himself. With the matter settled and a new hire already filling the role, the entire ordeal finally came to a close. After weeks of uncertainty and office drama, I’m simply relieved that the situation ended with clarity rather than consequences for trying to protect the team and our clients.
