I always imagined that the months following my wedding would be filled with happy memories, settling into married life, and planning a future with my husband. Instead, more than a year after our wedding, I am still dealing with the uncomfortable aftermath of my mother-in-law’s behavior and her unusual interest in our wedding gifts. While our friends and my family genuinely enjoyed the celebration, my husband’s family seemed far more interested in criticizing the event and comparing it to other weddings.
What began as an irritating disagreement has gradually turned into a bigger concern about privacy, finances, and boundaries. My mother-in-law insists she needs a complete record of every guest’s contribution so she can give appropriate gifts at future weddings, but her repeated demands have left me wondering whether there is more to her curiosity than simple etiquette.

Wondering what Reddit thinks? Let’s take a look.

After everything that has happened, I decided to delete the digital list of our wedding gifts while keeping my own private copy for the thank-you notes. I do not believe my mother-in-law needs access to every financial contribution made by our friends and family, especially when my husband and I were the only people who originally had access to the record.
Her interest in our gifts might genuinely come from wanting to remember what to give others, but her insistence on seeing the entire list, combined with her pressure for us to buy a house near her, has made me increasingly uncomfortable. My husband and I have our own plans for our finances, home, and future family, and I want those decisions to remain ours. Still, I cannot help wondering whether deleting the list was a reasonable boundary or an unnecessarily confrontational response to my mother-in-law’s demands.
