My husband is divorcing me because I don’t want more kids…AITA?

At 26, I never imagined I would be facing the possibility of divorce after nearly eight years of marriage, especially while still trying to recover from one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. My journey to motherhood has involved four pregnancies, two heartbreaking miscarriages, and a devastating medical emergency that nearly cost me my life.

After losing my fourth baby and enduring organ failure, hospitalization, and a painful termination, I know I cannot put myself through another pregnancy. I thought my husband would understand why protecting my health had become my priority. Instead, he has made it clear that my decision not to have more children is a dealbreaker, despite wanting six to ten more. Now, I am grieving the marriage and future I once imagined while trying to find the courage to begin again and protect the life I still have.

I Have Been Pregnant Four Times, And Although I Am The Mother Of One Sweet, Precious Living Child, My Journey To Motherhood Has Been Filled With More Grief And Trauma Than I Ever Expected

After Four Pregnancies, Two Miscarriages, And A Life-Threatening Pregnancy Complication, I Have Reached A Point Where I Know With Absolute Certainty That I Am Done Having Children

What Makes This Even More Shocking Is That My Husband Does Not Simply Want One More Child Or Perhaps Two Someday, But Has Apparently Envisioned Having Another Six To Ten Children

I Am Heartbroken That The Man I Built My Life Around Could Look At Everything I Have Endured And Still Treat My Refusal To Risk Another Pregnancy As A Reason To End Our Marriage

I Am Grieving The Future I Thought I Would Have, Terrified Of What Comes Next, And Somehow Also Hopeful That Starting Over Might Finally Give Me The Chance To Build A Life Where My Health, Happiness, And Boundaries Matter

I Decided To Stand My Ground And Told Him That If He Could Not Change His Terrible Beliefs Or Take Back The Horrific Bottom Line He Had Given Me So Soon After My Pregnancy Loss, Then Our Marriage Was Over

He Promised To Change, Apologized Repeatedly, And Seemed Deeply Upset By The Possibility Of Losing Me, But After Everything That Had Happened, I Could No Longer Bring Myself To Trust His Words Or Give In Again

Deep Down, I Know I Am Making The Right Decision Because I Can See On Paper That His Views And Behavior Are Not Those Of The Partner I Want Beside Me For The Rest Of My Life

I Miss My Child More Than I Can Explain, And The Pain Of No Longer Being Home Together All Day Has Become One Of The Hardest Parts Of This Entire Separation

Meanwhile, My Husband’s Family Has Been Taking Care Of Him And Helping Him Settle Into His New Apartment, Even Providing A Car For The Time Being And Buying Him Things He Needs To Get Started

I Know That Missing My Husband, My In-Laws, My Former Routine, And The Good Memories Does Not Automatically Mean I Should Return To A Marriage That Was Hurting Me, But My Heart Has Not Yet Caught Up With What My Mind Understands

What does Reddit have to say about all this? Let’s find out.

I keep reminding myself that doing the right thing does not always feel right immediately, but some days, that reminder is not enough to stop the tears. Watching my husband receive practical help and emotional support from his family while I struggle to manage work, moving, and the loneliness of separation has left me feeling painfully alone.

I appreciate what my parents have done, but I wish I had more support as I adjust to this completely unfamiliar life. I miss my child, my old routine, and even the happy memories of a marriage I know I could not continue. I do not regret protecting myself and creating a healthier future for my child, but I am still grieving everything that decision has changed. If anyone has survived a devastating breakup or divorce, I desperately need to hear that life eventually gets easier.
