AITA for refusing to financially support my parents and explaining why when my brother asked?

Family is supposed to be the place where you feel the safest, the most understood, the most protected, but for some of us, that’s the fairytale version we only ever see from the outside. For years, I carried a quiet, complicated history that no one in my family seemed interested in acknowledging, let alone understanding. I built my own life far away, in a different state, on my own terms and with my own hard work. I didn’t expect applause or recognition; I didn’t even expect love. All I wanted was distance from the people who had shaped my childhood with neglect, resentment, and painful memories I never asked for. So when my youngest brother, who grew up in a completely different version of the same family, asked why I wasn’t financially supporting our parents, it felt like someone had cracked open an old door I’d spent years firmly sealing shut. And once the truth finally spilled out, everything I had held inside for decades came crashing into the present, and suddenly I wasn’t just explaining a financial decision, I was confronting an entire history they had conveniently forgotten.

What does Reddit have to say about all this? Let’s find out.

Now that the dust has settled, I’m left with a strange, heavy quietness, the kind that only comes after you’ve said the truth out loud and watched everyone walk away from it. I don’t feel guilty for refusing to pay for a household I was never welcomed into, and I don’t regret explaining why. If anything, it feels like the first time I’ve chosen myself over a family narrative that never included my reality. It hurts, of course, losing an entire side of your family always does, no matter how distant they were. But there’s a certain peace in recognizing that setting boundaries isn’t cruelty, and walking away isn’t betrayal. I built a life without their help, their support, or their guidance. And if choosing not to subsidize their lifestyle makes me the villain in their story, then so be it. I’d rather be the villain in their version than remain the silent, forgotten child in mine. In the end, the truth didn’t cost me my family; they were already gone. All it did was show me that I’m finally free.
