I Said ‘No’ to a Diaper Change and Chaos Ensued — AITA?
My sister-in-law and her husband had a baby two years ago. Overall, no major issues — but they often expect others to do things I feel they should handle themselves.
For example, when they visit (they live about an hour away), they’ll text ahead asking if we have their kid’s favorite crackers. I’m not sure why they don’t just pack them — it’s not a money issue, they’re well off.
They’ll also do things like leave the room and ask one of us (my wife or even our kids) to “watch the baby,” even if the other parent is literally right there on their phone doing nothing.
Whenever I mention this to my wife, she just tells me I’m overreacting.
I understand why OP refused to change the diaper but who the heck asks someone else to change their baby’s diaper when they’re standing right there? I am a parents and I would never ask someone to change my baby’s diapers.
I feel like OP handled it gracefully and tried not to hurt anyone’s feeling. OP’s wife didn’t offer him any support in setting a simple boundary. I wonder why didn’t his step in and offer to change the diaper? That’s right, because she doesn’t want to do it either. You have a wife problem. She needs to shut this down with her family, not encourage it.
