AITA for not being as excited about my younger sister’s dog adoption as I was about my older sister’s new child?

Family dynamics can become surprisingly complicated when big life events happen close together, especially when people feel that attention, support, or celebration isn’t being distributed equally. In my case, I live across the country from the rest of my family, so whenever something major happens, I try to show up in meaningful ways when I can. Recently, my older sister welcomed her first child into the world, a huge milestone that naturally brought a lot of excitement and attention from everyone in the family.

I took time off work, flew across the country, and spent a week helping out however I could while also enjoying the chance to meet my new nephew. It felt like one of those rare family moments that deserved extra effort and support. However, shortly after I returned home, my younger sister announced that she had adopted a dog, and what should have been a simple congratulations quickly turned into an unexpected conflict. Somehow, the situation escalated into a comparison between a newborn baby and a newly adopted puppy, leaving me confused about whether my reaction, or lack of enthusiasm, was truly unfair.

Wondering what Reddit thinks? Let’s take a look.

Looking back on the situation, I still find it strange that something so simple managed to turn into such a heated disagreement. From my perspective, celebrating a sibling welcoming their first child and congratulating another sibling on adopting a pet are naturally going to involve very different levels of involvement, time, and financial support. My intention was never to dismiss Jen’s excitement about her new dog; it’s great that she rescued a pet and clearly cares about it.

At the same time, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to treat a major life event like the birth of a child differently from adopting a puppy. The real issue seems to stem from Jen feeling overlooked or competing for attention rather than from anything I actually did wrong. Now the situation has escalated to the point where she’s refusing to talk to me, and even our mom thinks I should make some kind of gesture just to smooth things over. But I’m hesitant to do that if it only reinforces the idea that these two situations should be treated as equivalent.
