I never expected one of my closest friendships to turn into a debate over a wedding title, but apparently that is exactly where I am now. My best friend and I have known each other since seventh grade, so when she got engaged, I naturally assumed I would be standing beside her as Maid of Honor. She had been my Maid of Honor when I got married, and after nearly two decades of friendship, it seemed like the obvious choice.
Instead, she surprised me by announcing that she wanted her brother to be the Man of Honor. I was a little hurt, but I decided to accept it and move on. What I didn’t expect was to discover that, despite giving him the title, she still expected me to handle essentially every major responsibility associated with being the Maid of Honor. Suddenly, I wasn’t just a bridesmaid; I was organizing the bachelorette party, helping with decorations, answering questions, and apparently becoming the emergency contact for the entire wedding.
After Years Of Friendship And Her Being My Maid Of Honor, I Never Expected To Be Treated Like The Backup Plan

I Thought I Was Getting Demoted, Until I Realized She Still Expected Me To Do Everything

So Am I Actually Being Petty, Or Am I Just Refusing To Work A Job I Wasn’t Officially Given?

Time to see how Reddit weighs in on this drama.

What ultimately bothered me wasn’t simply that my best friend chose her brother instead of me. If she genuinely wanted him beside her, I could respect that decision, even if it stung a little. What made me angry was the realization that the title and the responsibility seemed to have been completely separated. Her brother gets to be honored as the Man of Honor, while I’m apparently expected to perform the actual Maid of Honor job because she doesn’t believe he can handle it.
That feels less like being included and more like being quietly assigned a job without receiving any recognition for it. I know some people will probably think I’m being ridiculous for caring about a title, and maybe there is some ego involved. But after years of friendship, especially after she held the same position in my wedding, I can’t help wondering why I’m expected to accept all the responsibility while someone else gets the credit. So now I’m left wondering: am I being selfish and overly concerned with the title, or is it reasonable to refuse to do Maid of Honor duties when I’m not actually being treated as the Maid of Honor?
