A wedding is supposed to be the beginning of a new chapter, but sometimes the people you bring into that chapter carry years of unresolved history with them. I spent most of my life knowing that my family was complicated. My sisters and I grew up in a deeply dysfunctional environment after my father developed a drug addiction, my parents separated, and the four of us were effectively divided into different sides of a family that never taught us how to have healthy relationships with one another. Nearly thirty years later, those wounds still affect us, and I have very little relationship with my sisters.
That is exactly why I originally wanted to elope when I decided to get married. I wanted something small, peaceful, and focused entirely on my husband and me. Unfortunately, my mother made it clear that she would not attend unless my sisters were invited, and one compromise after another eventually turned my intimate ceremony into a destination wedding involving relatives I had never planned to include. I agreed because I wanted my mother to be there. But after making all those sacrifices, what happened during the wedding trip left me wondering whether I had given up the wedding I wanted only to discover that my mother never intended to prioritize me anyway.

What does Reddit have to say about all this? Let’s find out.

What hurts most about this situation is that I don’t think I’m actually angry about the baby shower or the bad wedding photographs. Those things were disappointing, but I can understand that my sister was excited about becoming a mother, and I can accept that her husband simply did a terrible job photographing the wedding. What I cannot seem to understand is why my mother insisted that I change almost every part of my wedding to accommodate my family, only to spend the actual wedding trip with my sisters instead of me.
I had wanted to elope, but I agreed to invite people I had complicated and painful relationships with because my mother told me she wouldn’t come otherwise. I included my sisters, their partners, and even my estranged father, despite knowing how emotionally difficult that would be. Then, when I finally asked my mother for some time together after the wedding, she repeatedly chose plans with my sisters instead. Now she says I ruined my own wedding and refuses to acknowledge why I’m hurt. As I begin this new chapter with my husband, I’m left wondering whether I need to accept my family’s version of events or finally trust my own experience of what happened.
