AITA for refusing to let my wife travel with our 2-year-old son to see her sick ex-husband?

Some relationship conflicts are difficult because there is no obvious villain, no simple answer, and no way to make everyone completely happy. This is one of those situations. I’ve been married to my wife for more than six years, and we have a two-year-old son together. Recently, my wife told me that she wants to travel to Ohio with our son because her former husband is seriously ill, and she wants to see him before his condition becomes worse. I understand why this matters to her.

Whatever happened between them in the past, he was once an important person in her life, and knowing that someone may be facing a serious illness can make people want to say goodbye or create one final memory. My concern isn’t about preventing my wife from visiting him. I have told her that I’m completely comfortable with her going. What makes me uncomfortable is her decision to take our very young son with her without me, especially when she wants to have private conversations with her ex-husband and his family. Now a painful situation involving illness, past relationships, parenting, and trust has turned into a disagreement that neither of us seems sure how to resolve.

My Wife Thinks I’m Making Her Ex-Husband’s Illness About Myself Instead Of Showing Compassion During What Could Be A Very Difficult And Potentially Final Opportunity To See Him

I Understand Why She Feels That Way, And The Last Thing I Want Is To Make An Already Painful Situation Even More Difficult For Her Or Her Former Husband’s Family

Wondering what Reddit thinks? Let’s take a look.

At the heart of this disagreement, I don’t think either of us is trying to be cruel. My wife is looking at a seriously ill person who may not have much time left and wants to make sure he gets the chance to meet or see our son. She is also thinking that our child could someday ask why he never got that opportunity, and she doesn’t want to carry the responsibility of knowing she prevented it. From my perspective, however, our son is only two years old, and decisions about where he travels and who he stays with should involve both of his parents.

I have never said that my wife cannot see her ex-husband, and I even offered to travel with her so we could all be there together. Her desire for privacy with her former husband and his family is what made me more uncomfortable, especially because she has not yet worked out the basic details of the trip. I don’t want to make her difficult situation worse, but I also don’t believe compassion requires me to ignore my concerns as a father. Now we have to figure out whether there is a compromise that allows her to say goodbye while respecting both parents’ wishes regarding our son.
