AITA for buying my daughter toys and refusing for my niece? My sister is acting entitled about it all saying horrible things

Family tension becomes exhausting when every milestone, celebration, or small moment somehow turns into a competition. What should have been a harmless shopping trip and a sweet gesture for my daughter quickly exploded into yet another argument with my sister, who has spent years acting like my child should always come second to hers. My daughter has been struggling lately because my husband has been working constantly, and since she absolutely adores her dad, I thought buying her a doll that looked like him would make her feel comforted and connected to him while he’s away so much.

It was never meant to be some grand statement or insult to anyone else. But the second my sister saw me buying something specifically for my child, she immediately demanded I buy the same for her daughter, too, as if I owed equal treatment to both children at all times. The problem is, this wasn’t an isolated incident; it reopened years of resentment, painful memories, and cruel comments surrounding pregnancies, grief, and the loss of my first daughter that I’ve never fully forgotten.

Reddit always has opinions—let’s see their judgment.

At this point, the toy itself almost feels irrelevant compared to everything underneath the argument. What truly hurt wasn’t being called selfish or petty; it was once again being reminded how little compassion my sister seems to have for my feelings, my boundaries, and even my grief. I have spent years trying to tolerate her behavior for the sake of family peace, swallowing comments about my pregnancies, my children, and even the devastating loss of my stillborn daughter.

But hearing her weaponize that pain during an argument over a toy crossed a line I honestly don’t think I can forgive. Refusing to buy my niece a doll wasn’t about punishing a child; it was about finally rejecting the expectation that my own daughter’s happiness must always be shared, minimized, or sacrificed to satisfy my sister’s jealousy and entitlement. Maybe I could have handled my frustration more calmly, but after years of emotional digs and comparisons, I think I finally reached the point where I simply could not stay quiet anymore.
