AITA for not telling my family that my husband is transgender?

3 min 22 0

Some conversations are deeply personal, and no matter how close family members think they are entitled to be, there are still boundaries that deserve to be respected. My husband being transgender was never treated like some shameful secret between us, but it also wasn’t information we felt obligated to publicly announce to everyone around us, especially not to people we feared might react badly. From the beginning of our marriage, we were honest with each other about the future we wanted.

Biological children were never the priority for us, and adoption was something we passionately believed in long before we even started the process. So when my parents kept pushing fertility questions and hinting at doctors and treatments, we tried to gently steer the conversation away without exposing details that belonged to my husband alone. Unfortunately, what should have been a thoughtful anniversary gesture quickly turned into a complete emotional disaster after my parents spent hundreds of pounds arranging fertility appointments we never asked for, ultimately forcing my husband into an incredibly uncomfortable position.

Curious to hear the verdict from Reddit on this one.

Looking back, I can understand why my parents may feel embarrassed or frustrated about spending money on appointments that will never happen, especially because they genuinely believed they were helping us. But at the same time, their reaction after learning the truth made it painfully clear why we were hesitant to tell them in the first place. Instead of focusing on our happiness, our adoption plans, or the fact that my husband trusted them enough to come out, they immediately turned the conversation toward being owed information about his identity and demanding reimbursement for choices they made without consulting us first. That’s the part that hurts the most.

Privacy is not deception, and being transgender is not something that requires family approval before someone is considered worthy of love or acceptance. We never lied about wanting children; we simply chose a different path toward building our family. Maybe we could have handled the conversation earlier, but I still don’t believe anyone is automatically entitled to intimate details about another person’s body or identity simply because they’re related by marriage.
