AITA for exposing my future BIL’s shady past to my family?

Families like mine pride themselves on closeness, the kind where Sunday dinners are sacred, where engagements are celebrated loudly, and where everyone believes they have a say because we just care so much. So when my younger sister got engaged to a man who had seamlessly woven himself into our lives with charm, politeness, and just enough mystery to seem intriguing rather than suspicious, I was genuinely happy for her.

He was attentive. Respectful. Grateful to be included. The only thing he kept guarded was his past, a vague, rough upbringing none of us were encouraged to probe. And we didn’t. Until one emotional evening cracked that silence wide open. What I learned wasn’t just a difficult childhood. It was an addiction. Needles. S*x work. Po*n. A history so heavy it felt like it shifted the ground beneath everything we thought we knew. And once I knew, I couldn’t unknow it.

Curious to hear the verdict from Reddit on this one.

Now the engagement is over, my sister isn’t speaking to me, and the man who once sat comfortably at our family table has vanished from it entirely. I never set out to destroy their relationship. I never told anyone he was not good enough. What I did was share information that fundamentally changed how I viewed him, because I believed my family deserved the same clarity. Maybe that was protective. Maybe it was intrusive.

Addiction recovery is fragile. Shame runs deep. And perhaps my decision, however well-intentioned, amplified fears he was already battling inside himself. But I can’t ignore the reality that relapse risks exist, that past behavior can echo into the future, and that my sister’s heart, and potential future children, could be impacted by those risks. The question haunting me now isn’t whether his past was ugly. It’s whether my sense of responsibility crossed into control, and whether trying to protect my sister ultimately cost her the very happiness I was trying to safeguard.
