AITA for cutting off my sister financially after finding out her unemployed boyfriend is benefiting from my money?

Family support can be one of the most meaningful ways to stay connected, especially after going through something as devastating as losing parents. In the years following our parents’ de*ths, my younger sister and I grew much closer than we had been growing up. I naturally stepped into a more protective, supportive role, wanting to make sure she never felt alone or overwhelmed while trying to build her life as a young adult.

Because I earn significantly more than she does, helping her financially never felt like a burden. Covering part of her rent, paying utilities, and occasionally sending extra money for groceries or other small expenses simply felt like something family members do for each other. For a long time, I never questioned it. But recently, the situation started to change. Her requests for money became much more frequent, and an unexpected encounter revealed details about her life that I had never been told, details that suddenly made me wonder whether my generosity was helping my sister or quietly supporting someone else entirely.

Wondering what Reddit thinks? Let’s take a look.

Looking back at everything that has happened over the past few weeks, I realize how complicated love and responsibility can be when family is involved. My decision to stop financially supporting my sister felt cruel at the time, especially because it went against the promise I made to always be there for her. Yet unexpectedly, stepping back may have been exactly what she needed to see the unhealthy situation she was in.

Watching her struggle through the fallout of that relationship was painful, but it ultimately gave her the clarity to stand up for herself and remove someone who had been taking advantage of her trust and kindness. Now we’re trying to rebuild our relationship on healthier terms, where I can support her without carrying the full weight of her life on my shoulders. She still has challenges ahead, but she’s beginning to take responsibility for her own future, and for the first time in a long while, I feel hopeful that both of us are moving toward a more balanced and honest chapter in our lives.
